There were some impressive results at the NZSS Athletics Champs in Timaru over the weekend. Ten athletes travelled to Timaru with coach Deon Wagner and manager Katie Spraggon. Top placings were:
- Edward Travers - 3rd in High Jump 8 m
- Edward Travers - 2nd in Long Jump 6.33m
- Jermaine Malaga - 1st in Boys Javelin 51.23m
- Daylee Dutton, Edward Travers, Jermaine Malaga, Kemara Kemara - 2nd in Junior Boys Relay 49.95 second
It was the first time in almost 10 years that MHS has taken a School Squad to the nationals, according head of sport Mel Martene. "We have had certain athletes compete over recent years under the Sir John Walker Throw For Gold umbrella. This year, however, with so much young, committed and high acheiving talent in Athletics we had to put a team together."
The team and their events were:
- Edward Travers - High Jump, Long Jump, Sprints.
- ?Isaac Tuala - Sprints.
- Jermaine Malaga (Throw for Gold) - Sprints, Discus and Javelin.
- Daylee Dutton - Sprints.
- Kemara Kemara - Sprints.
- Sonatane Kaufusi - Shot, Discus and Hammer.
- Toa Samupo Jr. - Hammer and Shot.
- Sau Fatuleai NgLam - Shot, Discus and Hammer.
- Salevalasi Hunt - Discus, Hammer, Shot and Javelin.
- Bruce Paulo - Discus, Hammer and Shot.
