We have received outstanding feedback about our students following a recent Foundation for Youth Development (FYD) ‘Experience Fonterra’ event.

Manurewa High School is piloting a Career Navigator course, run by FYD.  Career Navigator is a ready-for-work programme designed to provide secondary school students with the information they need to make informed decisions about future employment.  At Manurewa High School the programme reaches almost 1,500 young people from years 10 to 13.

The success of Career Navigator is due to a highly collaborative model which includes the school, a dedicated employer group and FYD. The employers share real world knowledge and experience and provide mentoring and experiential learning opportunities for the students.  This year the employer group was Fonterra, who welcomed us into their facilities and provided students with the opportunity to learn from 24 highly qualified Fonterra employees.

The students who experienced Fonterra were Michaela Clark, Roneet Goundar, Jordan Hona, Te-Wha McGee-Karawana, Aimee Scott and Solinna Toul.

Following the visit, we received this email from Victoria Hood at the Foundation of Youth Development.

“The students were outstanding and were exceptional ambassadors for Manurewa High School. They were surrounded by 24 extremely high qualified and competent Fonterra employees who were amazed by their maturity, commitment to career development and social engagement skills.

Fonterra was given a taonga designed by Tamara and the students. The key facilitators were amazed by the gesture. TeWha thanked the company by explaining the taonga’s wahakatuki. He did an incredible job and his growth in self-efficacy is to be commended. We have been invited to make application for a Fonterra community development award and I was approached continuously by inductees to ascertain if and when they could become mentors. The students were exposed to Fonterra’s organisational infrastructure and best practices. Many increased their understanding that theory can lead to many professional pathways and diverse work experiences.

None of the above would have happened without the school’s continued support and the incredible platform that you create to holistically develop each and every one of your students.”

We can’t ask for better feedback than that!  Well done to all students who participated – you are a credit to yourselves and the school.
