In 2020 The Manurewa Health Science Academy became official partners with the Counties-Manukau District Health Board. This relationship has provided us with the financial support to create specialised curriculum resources, given us access to medical facilities for student tours and linked us with health and community mentors including Pacific mentors and health professionals.

It is the intention of the health science academy to encourage more Māori and Pasifika to choose Science as an option to improve cultural equity in health careers. There are more than 80 different careers in this field including medical specialists, public and community health workers, technicians, midwives, nurses, dental workers, paramedics, therapists, mental health workers and many more.

Students apply to enter the Year 11 Academy in Term 3 of Year 10. Students who have been successful throughout Year 11 and Year 12 will be invited into the Year 12 and Year 13 Academy classes respectively. Students are placed into dedicated Health Science Academy kaitiaki classes at the beginning of Year 11.

Family support is critical to our student’s success and hence a commitment to the academy is a collective bond between the school, whanau, aiga and the students. Parent Talanoa takes place every term to share success stories and other important information like NCEA with the parents.

The academy will provide:

  • Academic support with NCEA Science, Mathematics, and English
  • Exposure to health professions while you learn
  • Learning opportunities with other students just like you
  • Access to the right tertiary pathways
  • Preparation and improved chances of securing a job in the health sector
  • Pastoral help and guidance
  • Leadership development

OUR VISION:

To nurture a desire and discipline for the sciences that inspires young people to pursue health careers that enable them to serve their community.

OUR EXPECTATIONS:

To Piki atu ki te rangi – Aim high and strive for excellence - our health science academy students aim to have at least 90% attendance, have a device, develop good work habits and resilience and above all enjoy your journey to success.
